Welcome to my new blog, Cocktail Books Chronicles.
The aim? To help expose the amazing Kenyan writers (writers from outside Kenya may feature at some point) and to tell the stories of the people behind the books. This blog is purely for the love of books. This blog will hopefully convince more Kenyans to read more Kenyan.
We, the new generation of writers, appreciate that it is a journey - why? Because we also grew up reading foreign books. We grew up knowing that Kenyan writers are only meant for set books, unless of course, you were lucky enough to sneak off somebody's copy of David Maillu's after 4.30.
But we have stories to tell. beautiful stories. Stories you can identify with. Places you can see in your mind because you have been there - you probably live there. Characters you can really feel because you see something about yourself in that character. It is a whole different experience from the one you get reading, say, a book about New York.
No, we do not want you to stop reading foreign books; there is absolute beauty in diversity. We only hope that you be open minded enough to read Kenyan writers, recognise them for their talent.
Every month, at least once or twice, I will be reviewing a book by a Kenyan writer. Every once in a while, I will be inviting readers to review a book by a Kenyan writer. I will also publish a Q & A by the same writer. Let's us know our writers. I have faith that this will be a success story of its own.
Every now and then, I will be dishing out tips on different things I get asked on email.
The first review will be of My Name is Toni' by Waithira Francis, aka Caroline Allegret. See you on Tuesday.
